Twas the day before opener, and all through the house
The anglers get ready for first ice lake trout
The rods were all set with tackle in tow
In hope that the morning would be good to go
The sleds were all packed with ice huts and chairs
plus augers, and heaters, and warm boots in pairs.
With spud bar in hand, to check as they go
It’s time to head out to drill that first hole
This ice was ready, and down the bait went
Hoping that soon the rods would be bent
A bounce off the bottom a jig and a reel
It was at this moment we hoped for a feel
When all of a sudden, there were marks on the flasher
I started to reel just a little bit faster
I felt a tug and set the hook fast
That’s when it shook, and swam and thrashed
As the battle took place deep down below
I reeled and reeled until it started to show
Lines a screaming, it went on a run,
That’s when I knew this was more than just fun
Soon enough the beast started to tire,
Thankfully so, my arms were on fire
Once again up it came, and we all gave a shout
There it was, the season’s first Lake Trout.
